Can I retrieve voice mails that were deleted when I upgraded?

I recently upgraded from a Samsung Intensity (not a smartphone) to an iPhone, and some very sentimental old voice messages were lost during the transfer. If I switch back to my Samsung temporarily, will the voice messages still be there, or are they lost forever? (Also--Verizon--it would have been nice if I'd been warned about this.)
