Grey reply box vs White reply box?

Some conversations in Message + have a white reply box, but some have a grey one. Is it something having to do with Chat vs SMS?

It does seem that grey=Chat and white=SMS pretty consistently on my Messages+ app (v.6.4.4, Google Pixel phone)
