I cannot change my email address to my current one. When I try the system says it is already taken. How do I get around that?
You probably have a different account set up with Verizon. If you are using a gmail address, just add a . anywhere in the address. Gmail ignores the dots, you can add a dot between each letter if you so wish. Verizon will think it's a different account, but it's not really.
firstlast@gmail.com is the same as first.last@gmail.com
Correct. Just like setting up multiple Twitter accounts using the same email address with dots and lines "_". I do that for one Twitter account. It works.
