Throttling after reaching hotspot data limit

For years, I've been struggling with throttling of my wireless service after exceeding my hotspot limit for my broadband router.  Finally, I solved the problem.  I have DirecTV and it is connected to the broadband router via WiFi.  I have a CradlePoint Router with "Client Usage" information and I found that my DirecTV was blowing away my hotspot data to the tune of 20-40GB in a week or so.  What was apparently happening is that I would set my DTV DVR to record a series of programs and without my knowledge, some of them were being downloaded via internet.  So, I set my router to block the DTV DVR.  I haven't missed any programming and my broadband internet usage is now half (or less) of what I was using and I haven't been throttled at all.  You don't really need to connect your DTV hardware to the WiFi unless you plan on doing a lot of streaming and if you don't have cable or FIOS, you probably aren't doing that anyway.  I can't believe all of the agony I endured because DTV was ruining my internet experience!
