I have a Motorola QIP 7100.  Can I use a Western Digital DVR Expander or any other DVR expander with this box?

The short answer is no.

There is absolutely no provision for expansion of any kind on either the 7216 or 6416 box at this time. There is a USB port and an ethernet port back,  however  neither port is inoperative. In short there is nothing to connect too.

 In fact you cannot even replace the internal HDD with a larger one to get more storage.

No, you cannot.   The QIP7100 is a STB without any support for DVR functionality.


The DVR models are the QIP7216 and QIP6416, neither of which supports any form or internal or external capacity expansion.


At this time, the only standalone HDTV DVRs that work with FiOS and support external drive expansion are the TivoHD and Moxi (compared here), both of which you must purchase.  Another option is a Windows 7 PC with a $250 ATI CableCard tuner.

To the above, I would note that Verizon plans to roll out a DVR with twice the existing capacity in 1Q or 2Q 2010.

My mistake.  It is the 7216.  I was looking at the wrong box.  Oh well.  So I guess they crippled the USB port on the 7216 huh?

Nope. I just upgraded my Tivo that has a cable card. TiVo wanted $52 to exchange a 4 month old defective box. I was told that all "previously enjoyed" TiVos are sent out with a new drive. But beware the drive I pulled out had a two year old date on it. Perhaps new to that box. Sorry for being off topic but I have been pleased otherwise. I installed a new terrabyte drive with a Tivo HD DVR drive image supplied by Instant Cake. I have tons of storage. Instant Cake for Tivo disk Image is $19. Thanks Tivo but no thanks. I am a rather do it yourself person. $50 to exchange a bad box I paid $200 for. I was told it would void the warranty. What warranty?

Crippling suggests that Motorola or Verizon disabled something on purpose.   They didn't do that.  The functionality was never there in the first place.

The typical PC/Mac has not only the USB hardware, but also firmware (i.e. a bios) and OS software drivers to support USB devices and USB storage.  Motorola DVRs have the hardware, but they don't have the firmware or software drivers.
