DVR only 9% full but just stopped a recording for insufficient disk space?

I just had one of my recordings stop midway due to "insufficient space." However, I only have 3 recordings showing 9% full. It's only about 4 hours of recordings. This can't be right? Any suggestions as to why this happened?

In the IT world that means you have a bad hard drive that needs to be reformatted or get a new one.

The  keeping of the books on the DVR's sometimes gets confused, and it think it has a lot less space in use than it really does.

I don't claim to understand why, but delete doesn't always free up the space the recording occupied.

The easiest way to force a 'clean-up' of the space allocation is to unplug the DVR from the wall electric outlet for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. The boot process will find and make all of the currently unoccupied space available, and leave the saved recordings intact.

I just had the same problem. A recording stopped after recording 28min and 37 seconds. The DVR was 45% full. Recorded some other programs, then deleted the one in question. Next time tried recording, same thing, and exact same time recorded. Then it stopped as before due to insufficeient space.

Should I get a replacement DVR?

thanks...marty

This is weird.  It has never happened to me, but all of a sudden last night, with 60% disk space used, I kept getting messages that the DVR was going to stop recording because it was out of space.  And then it stopped recording!!!

Why would a lot of DVRs start doing this at the same time?  Sort of like "bad gateway".  Makes me believe it  is a Verizon issue and not an individual DVR issue.

Same problem here which started on the evening of March 18th into early yesterday.  I have 2 DVR's and both had recording issues for the first time.  One showed 100% space used, even though there was just 43% used and anything that recorded was either not recorded or did for a few minutes.  The other DVR cut off one show by 3 minutes, another recorded for 36 mins. and yet a few of them recorded in full.  However,  yesterday's recordings just never happened.  So it's Verizon's problem as I called them to fix this.

I told them I knew there was VOD outage nationwide and the tech said it shouldn't have affected the DVRs but he was getting calls about the same issues we are all having here.   He made me do the following and what it does is resync the hard drive to the DVR.

This was the command:  On the FIOS TV remote, press STB, then press MENU.  Scroll down and select "Settings".  Next, highlight System Information.  Now press on the remote 4883, then OK.  Then press 2601 and then OK.   Each code updates something onscreen.

I got scared when all went black for awhile.  All I saw was a black screen and 4 dashes on the STB.   But it did eventually reboot everything.  I kinda looked the reboot it always does. Hope it works.
