I don't have any problem being patient and waiting, but no one has ever told me there was somewhere I could order an DVR exchange online and wait for an email.

you posted it earlier. What web browser are you using? it should let you enter an order using that link. when you go there it should ask you for your email address and you can put it in and hit submit.
Does it let you get that far? if not can you try another browser. I have had trouble sometimes with the vz website where it likes one browser over another, and there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason as to why. When we did it late last year that was the link we used.
I think you can also get it by logging into myverizon.com hover over service overview and then click on my services, and you should see a link for my stb's and when you click that the next page will come up and have a little link that looks like a picture of a DVR or a hard drive.
let me know what happens when you get there and what it's doing? I might not be on this forum for a little while, my ipad is about to die, but i will try to check later tonight. we have some experienced users here like smith and prisaz so maybe one of them will chime in if I am gone too long.
I called CS today, spent about 45 mins on the phone with a CSR and a manager. It was a waste of time, and I pretty much figured it would be, but I wanted to give them the opportunity to fail rather than just assume they would and not bother.
Based on what I've read here the only way to get a hold of a 7232 is to find a Verizon store that has one and physically go there for it. I can live with that. Why don't the reps at the contact center just say that then? It seems likely they have been trained to beat around the bush and to not tell you that. I kept being directed to ambigous links for getting myself on the "waiting list". The only thing even remotely like that I've been able to find on the site was the link for "want more out of your DVR?" or something like that, where I enter my email address. That was 3 days ago and I have not received an email. I'm curious to see if I ever get an email and what that email contains. My best guess is a form that I submit to "get on the waiting list".
So ok, I'll go to a store that has a 7232 in stock if I can find one...are they going to try to make me pay an upgrade fee? It's honestly probably worth $40 to me, but like somebody previously said this is egregious. All of their tv commercials have the black 7232 DVR and that is what I was expecting to get when I created my account last week.

I did that thre days ago. Two problems:
1. I have not yet received an email with instructions for how to upgrade.
2. That page indicates a $39.99 upgrade fee. Why should I have to pay an upgrade fee for something they made me think I was going to get by default?
Many thanks for reposting that information though because online that appears to be the one and only place they acknowledge in any way the upgrade scenario.
It took five weeks before I got a reply to my e-mail requesting an upgrade to a 500gb hard drive box. By that time I had already contacted a Verizon store and obtained a Motorola 7232 to replace my 6xxx DVR. There was no charge. There would have been a $40 charge for VZ to ship me the replacement box. Do a Google search for Verizon stores in your area. Call ahead to make sure they have the newer DVR's on hand.
Original installer insisted that I was getting a 500gb drive installed as I requested. Obviously he was wrong as I noticed how quickly the hard disk was filling up after recording just a couple of HD shows. All is well finally.
Just called VZ store in Paramus, NJ. She said they are "not carrying them". I asked if she knew of any stores in NJ that would have them and she said none of them do. I inquired about the usage of the phrase "not carrying them" to clarify whether that meant they have never had them and will never or if that meant out of stock. She said that they had them in October but none since. So I guess that qualifies as out of stock. She then told me that most customers handle this by ordering online. I didn't even bother to try to explain to her the futility of an online "order". So I guess the bottom line here is that they are just out of stock. I'll try a few more stores in NJ and maybe even a few that are far away from me just for the heck of it ...maybe somewhere in Pennsylvania.
I'm a very principled consumer and this rubs me the wrong way. A terrible way to start a customer relationship. I get 30 days to switch back and I just might. I get it that they are out of stock, but the DVR was a big reason for my switching. If somebody could concretely tell me: "We will have them back available in 5 months" that would probably make me feel a lot better. It's the uncertainty and misinformation and misdirection that bugs me the most. At this point I don't trust I'll ever be able to get one, even if I pay an upgrade fee.
That stinks. I think if I were in that position, I would switch providers. From what you said, I guess Verizon is telling you to just settle for the poor quality that you have while paying all of this money per month to keep the service. That's a ripoff and even if the shortage is being caused by a natural disaster overseas as someone else here pointed out, it's still no excuse. I completely fault Verizon for this and for not stocking up ahead of time knowing full well in advance that the older boxes would not accommodate the new IMG display. I don't like the customer service from most of these corporate giants and Verizon's customer service is not very good at all. It makes Bank of America seem like a walk in the park. The communication has a lot to be desired and it's poorly managed.
I know I have said this before but after the plug was pulled on the analog antenna TV reception and I eventually had to subscribe to a cable or the fios service, I knew that the nonsense would begin.
None of these corporations think or plan ahead for the long term about anything. Their philosophy is very short-sighted and I feel like it's only about these short term profits. They're so cheap because they don't want to invest and what does that say about the long term?
