I think it's wrong for services like hbogo to require my real password to know that I have hbo thru verizon. If that info gets hacked the hacker can invade my info for my router password and access my home network. There should be another way for them to verify the info.

HBO doesn't even access it. You are signing onto a Verizon page. That then stores info (on a PC using FLASH) that says that you are subscribed.
My understadning is that they don't store it.
But it is used to validate that you have HBO and that is what they store.
That is why people complain about not being able to use HBOGo when Verizon is having problems.
