Remote won't fast forward

We have the Verizon Fios DVR remote and it stopped fast forwarding when we watch recorded shows and shows On Demand.  We have replaced batteries numerous times.  The volume works most of the time.  Is there a fix for this, or do we need to get a new remote?  We have had this one several years, but have just noticed this fast forward business in the past few months.

For many VOD the provider request and the Verizon STB's honor that no fast foward or skip be enabled.  They don't want you to be able their various ads/etc.
