Device Trade In Promotion

I traded in my LG phone and I was told it was worth $700. Naturally, I thought this was too good to be true. As it turns out, it was. I traded it in, he said I only had a balance of a couple hundred dollars with the activation fee for the new phone. This all worked fine. I got my new phone, they kept my old phone, my bill stayed the same and the service, as usual, was good as it has been for many years. My employer no longer pays for my phone so I decided to switch carriers. I wanted to make sure I was good to switch and it showed I had $580 to pay off on my phone. When I asked about it, at a different store than where I bought it, they said they've had many reports that customers are being lured into contracts by offering trade-in values for phones. I complained to them about it even though it was a different store. I asked them to give me the final bill and cancel my service. They said that I have to complain to corporate and they can't do anything more. They said they can't stop service, they can only sell phones, start service, upgrade service, upgrade phones, help problem solve phone problems, but can't stop service. As usual, they make it easy to get in but hard to get out. So, to get out of Verizon, I had to pay the retail value of the phone even though they told me that it was a 1:1 trade at the beginning. After so many years with Verizon, I'm done. Even with me paying the balance, my new carrier will save me all of that money in less than 8 months. I will save a total of $800 per year by switching to a different carrier that uses all of the same towers, I just won't get 50GB data...as if I even need it. Good riddance. Is this how a business should conduct itself? Such low integrity. In the end, it was on me for not reading all the fine print or asking the right questions, but I'm still bitter they weren't transparent and forthcoming just to make the sale.
