5g eats battery fast and is sloooow

I noticed on my Pixel 8 and 9 over the past year that I can't request LTE only, and turn off 5g.  5g doesn't work in buildings, barely works outside, and eats battery like crazy. Is there a way to turn off 5G anymore??

Hopefully someone with Verizon will contact you to get some more information, because I don't have that problem with 5G on my Android phone.  Google comes up with instructions on how to shut off 5G on Pixel phones as well as some YouTube videos.  Unless...Verizon has turned it on with their carrier phones?  My Samsung is unlocked, but Samsung removed manual band selection on their phones so I can't do it either.

Hello, Jacpgh. My apologies to hear of this issue, but help is here. Just to confirm, what do you experience with your service upon leaving the building? What is your zip code? Lastly, please see the link below for the steps to change your network mode.

Thanks for this information, but this link is for something different, and not for shutting off 5G.  Changing the network mode means disconnecting a device from Verizon's network and allowing it to pick another network if one is available, which will most likely incur Travel Pass charges if one is close to the border with either Mexico or Canada.  If one were in the US, the only other networks which would come up would be Verizon's competition, which wouldn't let a Verizon customer use their towers except for 911 calls.

You should be able to disable the 5G on the Pixel 8 or Pixel 9 by following the steps below. -Ross

  1. Accessing Network Settings: Open your phone's Settings app and go to "Network & internet".

  2. Selecting SIM: Tap on "SIMs" and then choose the specific SIM card you want to change the network settings for.

  3. Choosing Preferred Network Type: Scroll down to "Preferred network type" and select either LTE (4G) or 3G.

  4. Disabling 5G: Choosing LTE will effectively disable the 5G connection on your phone.
