So in my quest to save some money on expenses, I called Verizon to see if I can get rid of the unlimited internet access I have on the phone. It would save me $30 a month-well I think I would have had an easier time convincing the Louvre to let me have the Mona Lisa. " Well it's the best plan available for you" " But I don't want it-there's wireless everywhere and I can get by without the internet on my phone-"Well all cell phone companies require data and you are stuck with this plan until it goes away." Ok fine-Is the internet required to make a phone call? " Well no but you are stuck with the data plan and if we switch you to a lesser plan it will cost more." My response to that-" I don't think that is what less is more is supposed to mean-what if other industries did that-well if you don't want the Cadillac and buy the Kia-you'll have to pay more." Well now I am waiting for a phone call from the third manager in the Verizon customer service division.
50 minutes of phone grief. Let's see how the phone call this afternoon goes.
Well talked to more than one supervisor and got the same spiel all day-I am stuck with data plan on the smart phone. They really want to hold onto that $30. I realize that if I get rid of the data plan i would lose a lot of apps but so what. Phone calls do not require the internet and I could still use wireless if needed. So the customer service is basically unhelpful and the supervisor you get connected to is useless. Any ideas how I can get around the spiel talkers and get the plan cancelled? It's a Verizon policy not a federal one to have the data plan. Do they really need my $30 per month?

Smartphones require a data plan. If you don't want a data plan, get a basic phone.

Quite frankly if you don't want data simply buy a non data phone. They still make them
It is the policy of Verizon to have you on a data plan with a "DATA PHONE" if you just want phone service get a non data phone. If you want wifi service only buy a tablet, or a laptop or an iPad.
You knew what you were buying from the start. You are now stuck with it unless you do as I posted.
No other answer you get from anyone will be different from what I just told you.

Verizon's policy is gotta have a data plan on a smart phone. Why not put the phone and plan up on eBay or one of the cell phone trading sites, unlimited data plan is valuable, someone out there will jump on it.
Then get a cheapie prepaid phone you can pay for via refill cards as needed.

Do you need smartphone if you just want to make phone calls? Get an old fashion flip phone and you can ditch the unlimited data plan.

I absolutely sympathize with you. I found this also figuring out how to step back from my data plan. Although i’m trying to just take it off my late mother’s phone. I need her phone to work and stay active and be able to connect to WiFi but I do not need unlimited data on it as it uses 0% data now. It’s unfortunate people don’t understand their situation is the only one that matters, telling you to get a flip phone. Hopefully we can all get our problems worked out
