Does cloud backup remove content from a device?

Hi all, I'm new to Verizon and cloud services. I set up auto backup to cloud on my new phone without realizing how little storage you get for free.  Now I want to back up more important things than photos. I really need to know if backup removes photos from my phone when it backs them up, or just copies them.  I feel like a noob for asking,  but thanks for the help.

if you are talking about Verizon cloud backup, just copies.  If you are on more everything, you can get the 25GB plan free.
