Restoring your messages is very important. Did you have them backed up to the Verizon Cloud? Are you trying to use the Cloud app to restore? First, make sure the Verizon Cloud app is full up to date and no other applications are pending update (this can cause a bottleneck). Then, open the Cloud app and go to tools >> content restore >> choose messages >> then restore. Make sure the device is connected to wifi to ensure fast download speeds.
