How do I download all of my pictures from the cloud?

Please explain to me how to properly get all my pictures (aprox 8gig) downloaded off the cloud to my computer.  I have tried several times by selecting them all and they pressing download.  It appears to be downloading; however when it is all down it has just left a zip file on my computer which appears to be empty.  At least that is what the computer is saying.  I even tried downloading just one picture but it still tries to use the zip file process which doesn't make sense to me.  I have also downloaded the app onto my computer but there isn't even an option to view or work with the pics.  It only seems to be something to sync with?  Seems this is a common problem and definitely not user friendly!

Others on this community forum have mentioned it is better to select smaller groups of the items instead of all of them to download and they will download as a zip file.
