Starting early September, we stopped offering a free service so if you got the notification it is likely you are getting a $2.99 credit as well. If you are not getting the offsetting credit you shouldn't be getting the notification to move to a paid service.
With that $5.00 you are getting significantly more storage so the cost GB offers a better value. As cell phone cameras get higher resolution we found that more and more people were running the max of the free services and their backups were stopping preventing their precious photos from being saved in the event of a problem with their phone or when they upgraded their phones. Moving away from the free storage was a difficult decision for us because we realize the frustration it would cause our customers like yourself.
Regrettably, if you don't see the extra value that the 500GB provides, jav6 suggestion is the only option.

Nothing can be done but pay for the upgrade if you want to store your content on the Verizon Cloud. Your contacts will be stored for free but no content. If you don't want to pay for the upgrade, you'd have to use some other method or cloud storage service.
