How do i receive text messages on my ellipsis 8 using its assigned number?

I was told that my tablet could receive text messages.  The only way I have been able to figure out how to do it is to have it linked to my cell.  I know my tablet has an assigned number to it, can I use that number to receive texts or is the linked method the only way?

The only way a tablet can get text messages is either...

1) Link it to a phone through Verizon Messages (verizon +)

2) a 3rd party application downloaded through the play store.
