160 character limit on texts

Why is it that when I text somebody that does not have Verizon and I go over the 160 allotted characters the message is not automatically broken up into 2 different messages?  Why is it that they only get the first 160 characters? The other networks do not do that. It is very frustrating to have to stop my train of thought and save the message as a draft and then try to pick up where I left off in a new message.  Is there a way to set up my LG EnV2 so that it will automatically break it up into multiple messages?

If you are going to type a long text and you know you're going to go over the 160 limit, you could select pix message and just not insert a pic. This gives you 1000 characters.

Hope this helped.

The 160 character limit comes with the SMS (Short Message Service) 'standard'.  The suggestion to use a pic message is the best solution.

Here is a good explanation of SMS & MMS.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service
