I currently have an LG Voyager with a message only plan which has saved me quite a bit of money since I switched to it a couple of months ago when I saw it offered on the Verizon website.
My "New for Two" is up tomorrow and I'd like to upgrade to a smartphone but I see the message only plan offered for smartphones is only available to the hearing impaired.
I only use about 20 voice minutes a month (but I do text a lot) and can't justify the $50/mo increase in my bill for the smartphone.
Does anybody know of any other, cheaper, smartphone options for people with very low monthly voice minute usage?
Thanks

There aren't any with Verizon.
Unless you are hearing impaired, you have to subscribe to a Nationwide Calling Plan as a well as a $29.99/month unlimited data feature to use a smartphone on the Verizon network. I would suggest finding a 3GMM phone that you can be happy with or looking into other carriers.

Thanks for the information. That's too bad, I didn't want to leave but they're pricing me out. In this day and age, not everyone needs a $39.99/mo voice plan.
I did some research and found a plan on Sprint that would be $20/mo cheaper than the comparable Verizon plan. I'll just ride out my contract.
Verizon would be smart to add a 200 minute $19.99/mo plan. I could live with that, oh well.

Hey,
Have you checked into whether or not you can get a discount on your calling plan through where you work? I know I got one and it saves me 15% every month. Some discounts may vary, depending on agreements made with specific corporations. (I sound like a commercial). Anyways...hope this helps.

We get 15% through my husbands work but we have the 700 minute a month family plan and verizon told me if we went any lower than that we wouldn't get the 15% so I don't think you can get it on just a real basic plan or that's what they told us and every one else I know that gets a work discount it's the same. Hey, Mary,
Thanks for reminding me about that part of the discounts. I did come up with one "loophole" the original poster in this thread might try. He/she could get the plan in their parents name and if the parent is over 65 years of age, then the plan would be %29.99/month for 200 minutes on the Nationwide 65 plus. He could just pay the bill each month but it would be in the parent's name.

You cannot use postpaid phones that require a data package on prepaid plans, so 3GMM phones and smartphones are out.

Hi,
Just curious if the prepaid 3G Smartphones will ever come about. I would think there might be a market for prepaid phones like that. Anyways, just curious.

Wonder how they would do that since you have to pay the data fee? Mary
