Basic phone plan/Domestic(?) texting to Canada no charges?
noside
Newbie

Hi, I'm on one of the basic family share plans and have been texting a friend in Ontario. However, after maticulously looking at my statements, I've noticed that I have had no additional charges added. The texts showed up as Domestic texts - which if someone could clarify for me, would be great.

As far as I understand, in some networks, domestic means strictly within the United States and in other networks it means just anything besides your own network. So what is it for Verizon?

Also - As far as me not having any additional charges added on, should I be worried that they will slam on my next bill? Or do you guys think I am safe? It's almost eerie that I haven't been charged.

I also spoke to this friend for about an hour and as far as I know, have not been charged extra... Thanks for the help

you're ok.

While traveling in the U.S.,Canada, Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico text messages sent to non-U.S. phone numbers of participating carriers will not be applied against any monthly text messaging allowance and are charged the following:
  • $0.25/address sent
  • $0.20/message received
Text messages sent to phone numbers in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico are charged domestic rates per your plan.

I agree with StormModder; any text messaging you do to Canada will be included in any type of package/plan that you're paying for. It technically is international but since Canada is part of the North American Dialing Pattern, along with Mexico, it won't charge you anything additional.

Your friend was in Mexico, but you were back in the States, right? You're fine. You weren't roaming -- your friend was. It's your friend who will get the roaming charges.
