HI pbandjg3,
You have 1 more option. As long as your mobile was subscribed for 'Integrated Messaging' which is usually a default, you can receive and respond to your messages on your WEB account. Follow these steps below.
To set up and use Verizon Messages on the web:
1. Go to http://vz.to/1gzzGcv
2.Select 'Go to Web App' ,
3. Login to your My Verizon account and follow screen prompts.
Thanks for using Verizon Messages!

Without having the code to verify, you cannot register. The code will only go to the phone activated on that line. In this case, I know no way to make this work unless you have a backup phone you can activate in its place for now. Since it sounds like you haven't registered the phone yet to work with Messages, there is also no way to access messages via PC webpage either that I know of.
