My wife and I each have a Pixel XL running Android 9. Occasionally I noticed text messages arriving well after they were sent. At the time we were using Verizon Message+ on both phones. I subsequently switched both phones to Google messages.
Last Thursday, 6/13/2019, my wife sent me a text, I responded and then she sent a second text. Her second text to me was delayed by more than 70 minutes. The delay caused significant and unnecessary confusion.
Neither of us were moving at the time. My wife was at an open-air event with good cell service and no WiFi. I was at home with WiFi messaging turned off.
If I cannot count on text messages going through in a timely fashion, I am going to be forced to use voice calling instead of texting. That is an inconvenience to us and a higher cost to Verizon.

Here we are, five months after I first reported the problem and delayed texts have become so routine that I don't even report them anymore. I now use SMS for Web to get my texts in a timely fashion. What a shame that Verizon text service has become so unreliable!

As a customer myself who constantly uses my text messages, I realize how important it is to be able to receive your text in a timely manner. You should not have to wait 70 minutes. I understand how confusing that can get. I will make sure that I help you as much as I can. What messaging (Messages + or the preinstalled messaging app) application are you using? How long has this been happening for? Is your wife experiencing a delay when she gets your text? Please elaborate.

As I said in my opening paragraph, "At the time [that we first noticed the problem] we were using Verizon Message+ on both phones. I subsequently switched both phones to Google Messages." Google Messages is the preinstalled app. So, clearly, the problem has been observed with both apps.
Yes, the problem has been observed by both my myself and my wife. The problem has been occurring for several months, but with low frequency. I cannot tell you exactly how often.
The problem is easy to identify after the fact since the outgoing message is tagged with the time sent and the incoming message is tagged with the time received.

Do you only notice delayed texts when you are at home? Do other services such as calling and data function normally when the texts are delayed? What is the make/model of both phones?

I spend most of my time at home so the problem usually, but not always, occurs when I am home and my wife is not.
Other services, such as calling and data, function normally even when texts are delayed.
As I mentioned in my original message, "My wife and I each have a Pixel XL running Android 9."

Thank you for the helpful information, Physicist. I'm glad to hear your data and calls work well. Please reset your message app with these steps, http://spr.ly/6601ESZO1. How much memory is available on your device, http://spr.ly/6602ESZOG? What signal is showing on the device when at home?

1) I have reset Google Messages as directed above.
2) I have 32 GB of total memory with about 7 GB free.
3) The signal strength in my house is at least two bars.
I will continue to monitor the performance and post here.

Physicist,
Thank you for completing the steps as instructed, and we are standing by for any additional results that this bears. I hope they are positive.
I want to gain clarity about something you mentioned in your original message. You stated that when you were at home you had Wi-Fi Messaging off. Are you referring to your Wi-Fi connection being turned off, or something else? Please elaborate.

I did not turn off WiFi in the house.
I had been using Verizon Message+ from the time I bought my Pixel XL (1/2017) until the problem became apparent a few months ago. At that time I tried to turn off WiFi messaging in Message+ and found no way to do it. Consequently, I switched to Google Messages because I learned that I could turn off WiFi messaging in Google Messages. Unfortunately, the problem persisted even with WiFi turned off in Google Messages.
The little experiment descirbed above led me to think that the problem resides with the Verizon network and so I began this conversation.

I have the same problem and have taken to hard restarting my phone to see if I have texts. I use messages from Google.
Like physicist, I've started using messages from Google on my laptop as a workaround. But the other day that was delayed too! Can anyone explain that? I was thinking the messages program on my computer would work independently of my phone...

I want to add that I am using a Samsung Galaxy S10e. And that it is outrageous that Verizon has not fixed this yet. I've had the problem off and on since September.

I rely on using my messaging constantly, shortylavender, so I fully know how upsetting it can be when things aren’t working properly. You are in a good spot to get some help. I looked through this thread and see some of the suggestions and steps you’ve tried. Let’s get into a bit more detail. Can you confirm the steps you took to do the “hard restarting [your] phone?” When using the messaging just on the phone, what happens? Does using Google’s messaging program from the computer involve a sync with your phone?

I do not get text messages specifically in group texts. When I do, i receive it individually under the person's name rather than in the group text. And I receive a blue download button, not the message. When I click download, sometimes it downloads and automatically takes me to the group chat. Most times it doesn't download, and just keeps loading. This is an on going problem since I got the Google Pixel 4 about 3 weeks ago.

dc321, we want to ensure you can receive your messages in the group as expected. We're here to assist. We just need some additional details. What messaging app are you using (standard Google one or Verizon Message+ or other)? Do you have the Auto-retrieve option for MMS turned on in your Messaging app settings? Do you get the option to Send an SMS reply to all recipients and get individual replies (mass text) or Send an MMS reply to all recipients (group text)?

I've had Message+ text delayed for up to 6 hours. I now use a another app with no delays. This is sad, because the Verizon app was the best until the delays started.

Hi Smudgetool,
I apologize for any sad feelings and the issues you were having with the delays with using the Verizon Messaging App. It's important to have the best messaging service and I am here to help. Are you still having issues with the Messaging App? Have you tried power cycling your device to see if the Verizon Messaging App works without delays?

What other App ?
Why would app make a difference, all the apps probably call into the same underlying system API for sending/ recieving texts.

What other App (besides Verizon Messenger and Google Message) are you guys having success with ?

Also, note that after you get your super delayed message, you can click it and find out when it was actually sent. Which also points to some sort of networking problem in Verizon.
Back in the olden days, text messages were sent on a dedicated Paging channel in CDMA band. That was always on as long as you have any signal (1x,3G or whatnot). I am sure they are trying to switch to some advanced LTE Data based method and something is going awry.

I understand how important it is to get your messages on time, BigKuma. I'm sorry that you are experiencing problems with messages being delayed. Some messaging apps act differently since they might run on the internet (Messenger, WhatsApp, etc.) We can certainly look into messaging apps that are connected to our network. I want to get additional information. What is the make & model of your device? Are you using the default application on your device or Verizon Messages?
