Do text Messages through Verizon Messaging use data?

I liked the features in VZW's messaging app, however I noticed that my data was being eaten up. Turns out that in looking at my data usage, it was the app. So instead, I downloaded and am using Google Messenger.  If VZW didn't use data for texts I'd switch back immediately!  Anyone else experience this?

The Verizon Messages (Message+) Terms and Conditions | Verizon Wireless state "Data usage charges apply when using Integrated Calling, preview, location and search functions, and for the synchronization of messages among your devices."

It will use some data depending how it is being used.
