My question is how do I connect my Kyocera XE to google messages since this is a "dumb phone"

You will have to use the default texting app built into the phone as Google Messages has all sorts of features which are not compatible with your phone.
When I just checked elsewhere on the internet, was seeing stuff that said the Kyocera XE isn't compatible with Verizon, so I'm surprised yours works on Verizon?
