How do I stop getting unsolicited txt messages?

I have a LG Dare.  I'm getting txt message from someone asking me to reply with the text "Help". They appear to be some sort of tax service.  How do I stop these from coming to me?

You can block the number through your spam controls. This is free. The block lasts up to 90 days. After 90 days you'll have to re-enter in the number.....

You may also text the word stop or cancel to the number that you are receiving the spam messages from.

Yes, I considered that.  But then I thought it could be like spam emails and a reply  just confirms it's a valid location.  Then I'm getting pounded with unsolicited txt messages.
