How do I stop the ringtone

I have a loud and long mp3 as my ringtone to make sure that I hear it. When I get my phone out, how do I stop the tone? I tried pressing the home key, the X in the top right of the message, and the message body. Nothing works.

Is this for a text message, email notification, phone call? Have you tried a quick press and release

of the phone's power button?
