How do you disable the Emoticon to Emoji thing

If it isn't smart emojis, and it isn't a problem with my phone's keyboard, what am I supposed to do to get rid of it? The only solution Verizon gives is "Use a space between the " : " and the " ) " but that only works on your side and is a huge nuisance. If there is any up to date solution that doesn't include me deleting the app, please share it with me.
