It shows that I have a message at the bolltom with a number 1 in orange but the light doesn't blink and there is no unread message. The other issues is that I sent a new text message to 2 people at 3:00 pm yesterday and they just received it this morning around 5:30 am. No pictures just a simple message.

Let's get to the bottom of this and resolve your messaging problems. Have you deleted long messaging threads from the phone? This is to make sure there is enough memory to receive and send messages. Is the problem texting 2 specific numbers or all contacts? What zip code are you located in? Please reset the messaging app http://vz.to/1hSEebv and test messages again by sending one to yourself first.
