The easy answer:
If you are sending the messages to a phone number you will get charged. If you are sending to an email address, then there will be no charge.

SMS (texts) should not go out over WiFi. SMS is a carrier based service. On some carriers it's possible to send an email to an SMS and the phone will think it's a real SMS message, but for pure SMS, you have to be connected to a carrier.
Try it at home, and you should not see SMS messages go in or out while in Airplane Mode. If you are using instant messaging this is completely done via the Internet (over WiFi). They are not the same message types as SMS. Apple's iMessage is an instant messaing type of service that uses Internet and not SMS.

I know I can send and receive the messages on wifi using the VZ Messages App. My question is whether I will be charged .50 to send messages and .05 to receive messages while traveling in Europe and using wifi only.
