Is there any encryption used to protect user messages? Or is everything transmitted in the clear?
While in the air, the message is encrypted. But it is not encrypted on the sending phone , receiving phone, or cell company servers. So very difficult to intercept transmission without inside job, but easily discoverable by law enforcement or other legal requirements from the phone (if they can get into phone if the phone is encrypted) or servers. For end to end encryption you would need to use third party texting software on both ends.
