Making sense of text message..

I was sent this character as a text message and it read as a "[X]"..

I think its a control character.
Does anyone know what character would be? I want to find out what was really sent to me?

I know when some folks send a smiley face on a text it can reads sometimes a "J"..

This can happen when customers from other carriers send their "smilies, or preloaded pictures" to your VZW phone. Not a whole lot you can do about it unfortunately.
