I've had a 4GB plan for several years now and went over maybe once or twice this whole time. Then out of nowhere last month I started going over my data well before halfway through the billing cycle. I looked up my data usage and my Message+ app had used nearly 4GB of data. By the end of the billing cycle it had used 7GB! In past billing cycles I can see that on average the Message+ app used not even 0.1GB of data. I haven't made any changes in the app or to the settings on my phone. I haven't done anything new recently and can't figure out what is causing it to use so much data. I've changed the settings on my Galaxy S7 (not a new phone, had it for almost 2 years) to restrict background data although the majority of the data being used by this app is displayed as foreground data. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hi TIAHUR57,
There is a solution if you want to continue to use the Verizon Message+ App. You have to clear the app data and cache. Doing this will require you to log back in to Verizon Message+ after clearing the data and it will reset all your customization settings to default, but your messages will be restored when you login back in to your account. If you try this fix, then I recommend looking through your settings and take note of the options you've selected so you can revert them afterward.
To report a bug through the Message+ App:
1) Open Message+
2) Click the 3 dashed lines at the top left corner of the screen
2) Go to Settings
3) Go to Account
4) Report A Bug
To reset the Message+ app on an Android Phone:
Go to Settings->Apps->Application Manager
1) Scroll down to Message+ and select it
2) Click the "Force Stop" button
3) Click on "Storage"
4) Click on "Clear Data"
5) Click on "Clear Cache"
6) Open Message+ App and go through sign in procedure
7) Go through ALL your settings and turn off the features you don't want (some of these share location data that you may or may not want to share)
I did this fix over a month ago and immediately saw the Message+ data usage return to normal. However, I would still keep an eye on your data usage in case it starts to drain data again since I don't know what initially caused the app to start using excessive data.

Thank you for reaching out to us about this. Higher data usage can certainly be a concern. If you have increasingly used the application over time data usage can increase. Sending picture message through the application can also lead to higher usage.

I have this exact same issue. I also restricted background data in an attempt to stop Message+ from using all my data, but it just started using foreground data. It used over 400MB yesterday morning while it was just sitting on my desk at work. It's used over 4GB overall this billing cycle and in past months it's used less than 100MB.

That's terrible but I'm relieved I'm not the only one this is happening to. I ended up disabling the app and reverting back to the messaging app that came with my phone and my data usage miraculously stopped climbing. I'm on the verge of leaving Verizon anyways since this isn't the first issue I've encountered with them.

I was also relieved to see that I was not the only person this was happening too. Thanks for making the original post. I did the same thing, disabled the Verizon Messaging app and reverted back to the default. I left a negative review on the app store for it as well to warn other people and hopefully get Verizon to acknowledge the issue. I don't know what the app could possibly be doing to use THAT much data though or why it just suddenly started doing it.

It is important that you get the most out of your service with us. That the performance you get out of Verizon Messages+. Can you describe what kind of messages you are sending and receiving, and whether you are using Verizon Messages + to send messages though messaging services such as Glympse? Picture and Video Messages under 5MB should not be billed for Data.

I have been using Verizon Message+ app for years and have been sending the same kind of text messages which mostly consistent of basic text and occasional website link sharing, picture attachments, and group messaging. I do not use the messaging app for any messaging services. I haven't done anything differently recently than I have in the past. I didn't even use the app for a whole day and My Verizon data hub said it used almost half a GB of data! I have since disabled the app and my data usage has stopped increasing excessively. I am using the Samsung message app and sending the same kind of text messages that I was with Message+ and have not seen an increase in data usage.

We appreciate the time you've taken to troubleshoot this data usage issue with us, RELL8891. This definitely is a concern, and is something that we do have a path in place to fix. If you go to Messages +, and choose the menu bars in the upper left corner of the application, there is an option in the fly-out menu to 'Report a Bug'. Getting this concern up to the application developer will allow us to work with them to get to the bottom of what's causing this usage.

I am not taking the chance of enabling this app again. It is currently disabled and the only way to get into the app is to make it my default messaging app. I don't want to lose anymore text messages than I already have by converting to the message app that came with the phone. I pay alot of money as it is for my plan and now I've lost data because of this problem.

There are third party applications in the Play Store for backing up the text messages. You could try using one to keep the backup of messages between the text message applications and between the phones.

I was able to re-active the app just to send the bug report. I don't think I had to make it my default messaging app just to send the report. I was able to open it, send the report, and then immediately disable it again without losing any messages. I also waited until I was connected to my home WiFi so it wouldn't try to use mobile data again.

There are also several sms backup applications in the Play Store that will backup all the text messages not just the 90 days Verizon Messages does.

I followed your instructions and there isn't an option in the menu to report a bug. Aside from that, will Verizon be replacing the data this app has used in the few days I had it enabled this billing cycle?

RELL8891,
No, at this time we have no known issues with the Message+ application in relation to data usage. As an alternative, you would be able to use the default messaging application installed on the device or another 3rd party messaging application.

We're trying to tell you that there IS an issue with the Verizon Messages app in relation to data usage. I think most of us have already stopped using the app and reverted back to the default messenger or a 3rd party option, but that doesn't FIX the issue with the app. You should be looking for commonalities between those of us who have had this issue instead of pretending that it doesn't exist.
I would ask the customers who have had this issue the following questions:
When did you first notice the increased data usage?
What kind of phone do you have?
Do you have any other devices that are linked with the Verizon Messages app?
Do you have a smart watch or any other wearable that might communicated with Verizon Messages?
I first noticed the increase data usage in January 2018.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930V).
I don't have any other devices linked to Verizon Messages, but I have tried (unsuccessfully to link a tablet).
I have a Samsung Gear S2 Smart watch.
Those are all the things I could think of that somehow might be linked to the sudden massive increase in data that the app has been using, but it could very well be something else that I haven't thought of.

I submitted a bug report, but that doesn't give me any data back or a refund for people who had to purchase more data because of this issue. Is reimbursing it's customers for their loss of data/money part of Verizon's path to fix this issue? Or possibly some kind of warning to it's customers that this issue exists and they should check their data usage? Based on the sudden spike in my own data usage, it looks like the issue started around January 15th and was able to use over 4GB within 2 weeks before I disabled the app to stop it, but I wouldn't have even noticed the spike if I didn't regularly check it on a weekly basis.

I never did like messages+. Did you notice a change in your battery? When I first used this app I noticed that it used a lot of my battery up. I think with all the bloat that they put in that app that is what is using the data up. It was like a billboard for Verizon when ever I opened it. Verizon seems to be having a lot of problems with several apps lately. I hope that they can get a fix for some of them.
