Multiple duplicate messages being received...

My friend has Sprint, she has said that she has gotten the same text message 3 or 4 times. I'm not sending these, yet she claims that it's the same messages over and over. Anyone experience this? Answers? Thanks

I've been having the same problem. I have two friends who have Sprint and my girlfriend has Alltel and they all tell me they oftentimes receive 2-4 text messages from me at a time. I tried over the air updating my phone, but no help.

I do have a friend who also is with vzw but she says she receives duplicates from everyone. When I was with sprint I at times received multiples from my girlfriend, but now when I'm with verizon I never receive multiples, only send.

I don't have any answer for you unfortunately, I'm also on the hunt.

My daughter had the same problem with her previous phone - the issue seemed to be the phone.  It would always send two of each message.  Now that she has a different phone, she's back to sending single messages.  Annoying, yes, but we just got used to it; whenever I got two quick texts I knew it was her!  It does become an issue when your recipient is on a limited texting plan though. They'll get dinged for twice the messages.

I am having the same problem.  I called Verizon and they reset my phone and it worked for a day, but then back to sending duplicate texts to out of network phones.  It is getting very annoying.  I am going to go to Verizon tomorrow to actually speak to someone to try and solve this.

I have been fighting with Verizon for 5 months about this very same issue.  My 2 daughter's phones both receive and send text messages several times.  Not every single text, but it happens every single day.  Just last week, one daughter got the same text 7 times!.  We are on the US and Canada plan and they don't have unlimited texting on that plan, and even though I have the highest texting (5000)  this problem is very expensive for me.  I average about $100-150 a month in text overages.  One time it showed that one of my daughters had sent an amount of texts in 2 weeks that would average out to 200 texts a day.  Since she was home with me doing school online, I watched her and she sent and received about 30 texts a day, not 200.  But when every text you send is being sent 2-4 times and then everyone you receive you get 2-7 times, that will add up.

I have called Verizon multiple times- first they said it was the phone-this is her 3rd phone for one and second for the other, but the problem still goes on.  Then they said the texting feature needed to be deactivated and then reactivated on their end-still didn't fix the problem.  Same with both daughters who have very different phones.  One text guy said to have my daughters save all the duplicate texts their phones would save and to take them into a Verizon store to prove they were duplicates because he said he had no way of verifying the texts were duplicate. I live in Canada part of the year and in Oklahoma part time- so the next time I went back to the States I had to take the phones in and prove it to them.  In their defense they did refund the overages from that month and the month before, but the problem is still going on.  Finally after being on the phone with them about this problem for the 5th time, they are opening a trouble ticket.

These cell phone companies are making a lot of money off of texting.  So even if you have unlimited, if your texts are being sent to someone who doesn't and they receive it multiple times it will cost them.  If you are having this problem call Verizon and complain.  The cell phone companies need to be held accountable.  If they are charging us for texting they need to be accountable for problems in the system that are causing these multiple texts.

Has anyone been able to get a resolution to this problem? I have the LG Envy Touch. When ever I receive a picture text, several hours later I will receive the same text again, but the original sender didn't send it again. This started several months ago. It doesn't happen with EVERY picture text, but most of them, and sometimes up to three times. I have not had it happen with regular text messages, just with picture texts. Since I have limited texting, getting the same picture text 3 times adds up fast. I called the Verizon "help" desk and they reset the phone, had me take the battery out & put it back in (which I KNEW wouldn't work but I humored them), but it didn't work. They said to take the phone in to a store to have the software upgraded which I still need to do, but based on the Forum posts I've read, that hasn't worked for anyone else either. Any suggestions?

Try dialing *228 send and option 1 to re program your phone.  If this does not help, I would recommend you take your device to a local store to have some hands on trouble shooting done.

I have this problem, I tried the update (over the phone because *228 feature doesnt work outside of USA) and it never worked, also tried removing the battery, also failed. My wife has the same problem with her phone. Have gotten the same message over 50 times in 48 hours. And some of my outgoing texts dont work either..... beyond frustrated!

I did go into a Verizon store and they upgraded the software on my phone. I've also done the *228 several times. The tech at the Verizon store assured me the upgrade & the *228  would do the trick, however, I continue to get duplicates & even triplicates of photo texts. In June I exceeded my limited texting because of all the duplicates. This is very frustrating.

This could be result of Software bug in Verizon's SMSC and/or PPG server. (Verizon does not make their own SMSC / PPG server. However, they will have to reach out to their vendor and fix this properly.)

Without getting too technical, when a text message is sent from your handset, it is received by Verizon SMSC server. Then it checks the recipient info and request the PPG to notify the recipient handset that a new text message is received. If for some reason, there is communication issue between SMSC/PPG and the recipient handset, the SMSC/PPG will try to resent the message again. These servers will try few times to deliver the message before giving up.

So in the process, your recipients may get the same message multiple times.

Good luck in dealing with Verizon to fix this. Their average customer support would have no clue of what I communicated the above.

Is anyone still having this problem? I have the iphone4 and am apparently my phone sends the message to other people twice as well as randomly will send messages from days prior. It's really frustrating because my friends will reply back "what?"  when my phone apparently sends these random messages that come from a conversation that is no longer taking place.

I've done the *228 and had no luck.

I just got off the phone with Verizon (Call from a diff phone, 800-922-0204, option 3) and the rep was great. So far I'm fix but if anything changes I'll update this thread.

All she did was have me power down my phone and "Refresh the messaging features in the switch". I powered up, had a bunch of users text me and had no duplicates.

FYI - I'm using a Motorola Bionic. My issue was only occuring when the sender was an iPhone user. They could have been on AT&T or Verizon. I was also getting anywhere from 1 to 10 duplicates from the sender. I hope this helps. I'm going to post the same response in some other threads.

Oh and if you're on 4G, *228 is no longer used. I hope everyone understands that.

I have the LG Revolution with Verizon, my boss has a samsung with AT&T. We both have the same problem. I don't think its the phones anymore, I think that it is an issue with the service providers and the towers. It makes me angry that I could be charged for these extra texts. Something needs to be done.

Good afternoon, lisayurco!

I know receiving duplicate text messages can be an annoyance. Lets take a look at this! I want to reassure you that duplicate billing for messages is very rare, and does not happen unless the individual is chosing to 'resend' it repeatedly. Otherwise, it would be a communication concern between the two networks. If this is still an issue for you, please send me (AdamE_VZW) a direct message for further assistance.

Thanks,

I've been fighting this issue for MONTHS. I've reset back to factory, called repeatedly, formatted my SD card, etc ad nauseum. Some of the 'fixes' have offered very temporary relief but... it. just. keeps. happening. Sometimes it delivers the same text to me 6 or 7 times, sometimes the sender receives the texts I send 3-4 times. It's really getting old. My DROID 3 has been a laggy, buggy piece of crap and this issue is just making matters worse. I am due for an upgrade in a few weeks, but reading the reports on this, it seems the network, not the device seem to be the problem, no??

argh.

I was contacted via email about his issue. It was a rep from Verizon. I tried to respond but kept getting an error stating it was not a valid email address. I needed 6 pictures to be sent via text. Imagine my surprise at getting one of the pictures 5 times. I was told by the rep that there was rarely charges associated with the text coming in multiple times. However, I find it hard to believe that I won't be charged for those pictures. This is beyond frustrating. Certainly Verizon could find the problem and fix the problem rather than finding excuses or statements that are not reassuring at all. I am curious to see what my September bill will show.

Hello PeaceNikki,

I couldn't imagine the frustrations this issue has been causing you. I'm truly sorry this has been happening for so long.

I did a lot of research for your Droid 3 and I found earlier this year Motorola had issued a software update to address duplicate messages. If you could go to Settings > About Phone & provide me your System Version I would like to check it.

Is anyone else in your area having similar issues with a different phone type? Have we tried replacing your device?

Keep me posted!

Thanks,

Hello to you Halfreadbooks!

I'm so sorry that you're also experiencing the issue regarding duplicate messages.  I checked our recorded reports for the Stratosphere and I have some recommendations!

The first one would be to clear out your Messaging Cache/Data.  You can do that by following these steps:
http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=48165

Do you have any third party applications for your Messages? If so I would recommend uninstalling them and trying the native messaging application that came with the phone.

If you notice it only from a specific contact try deleting the contact and re-entering it into your phone.

If these steps don't work I would recommend a Master Reset of your device. Please ensure your personal information is backed up and follow these steps: http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=47757

Let me know how this works!

Thanks,

I have the Blackberry Torch 9850 and I receive multiple text messages sometimes on a daily basis.  The original sender is only sending them once, but I will get them like 6 or 7 times.  This is very frustrating.
