My account has two iPhones and a Galaxy S5, and none of them can send group texts in MMS. Switching to SMS works, but each recipient can see only his or her name, and not the names of the others on the text. My understanding is that MMS allows the recipients to see all the names.
Also, would MMS be billed against my data? I turned off iMessage on the iPhones so as not to use data for messaging.

It sounds like the Cellular data network settings for your phones/account may be affecting that. The phones would need to access the Cellular data network in order to send & receive MMS, however they are charged according to the messaging package for the account and not the data plan. Were your phones all purchased originally from Verizon?

Carston- thank you for that information. Yes, you would have to have Cellular Data turned on and iMessage does need to be turned on with the iPhones. Have you tried turning Group Messaging on with the iPhones?
