My text messages are not received

For the past month, many of my text messages are sent but not received. I can send to my usual email address and the message arrives quickly. I send to my gmail account and the message is "sent" but never arrives. When I text others about 1 in every 20 messages are actually received.  I'm using a samsung Gusto prepaid

Check to be sure you are sending to the full 10-digit phone number (no leading "1"). if sending to an email address, check your spam folder.

i just got my phone a few days ago. was working fine for text messages. now today when i send a message they are not being received on the other person's end.
