Outgoing messages over WiFi

Hello.  I have a Samsung Galaxy S10.  I use the Verizon Messages app for texting.  My understanding is it is supposed to work over WiFi as well.  Sometimes I am at a vacation home in the mountains where we do not have cell coverage.  While on WiFi I can receive incoming texts (though sometimes delayed), but outgoing texts fail to send.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct?  Additionally, WiFi calling does not always seem to work.  If I put the phone in airplane mode and attempt to dial it will tell me I need to turn off airplane mode even though I am connected over WiFi.  If I leave turn off airplane mode and attempt to call, sometimes the call will connect via WiFi and sometimes it will not connect at all.  I have found the only reliable solution is to forward my calls to a Google Voice number when I have limited cell coverage, place the phone in airplane mode, and connect to WiFi.

It's great to know that you're using Message+, but it looks like there's some miscommunication on how exactly it works when it comes to Wi-Fi. Texts and picture messages are still sent and received through a mobile connection. The Wi-Fi factor happens when you are using a tablet or iPad with Message+, as you can sync your texts between multiple devices. You're also able to send and receive texts via computer: https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-94861/ .

As for Wi-Fi Calling, that does rely on the available speed and bandwidth of your internet. When there is no cellular coverage, or the device has airplane mode enabled with Wi-Fi turned on, then your device would use Wi-Fi Calling. Are you sure that your phone is actively connected to Wi-Fi when you start to make a call? I ask because while the phone would be connected, if it timed out from no activity then that would make the phone ask you to turn off that mode so it can restore the connection.

What happens when you try from the  stock samsung app that came on the phone?  Never used message+ but on my Samsung phone I am able to send text over wifi with the stock Samsung app that came on the phone no problem.

I haven't used the stock application.  I assume you mean "Messages".  While using it are you in airplane mode or on WiFi with the phone unable to find service?  Thanks.

If I am in airplane mode connected to wifi Samsung  messages send and receive fine for me.    I don't like message+ so don't use it.  I would test another messaging app to see what happens.

Also I can be in airplane mode connected to wifi and send and receive pictures messages.  My phone is a samsung note 10 plus with 4g only and I am using the stock samsung messaging app that came on the phone.  My last phone LG G6 worked the same as did my LG g5 when I had that, with those I used the stock LG messaging app that came on the phone.   I guess I don't understand why message+ doesn't work the same way.

You mentioned in a message that you want to use the Verizon Message+ app with WiFi only and without an active cellular service line. I would like to clarify that the Verizon Message+ App requires an activate Verizon Wireless cellular account to work. Does this information clarify your concerns?

Sorry, there is some confusion here. I have an active cell line. The issue is when I am in a remote locate that does not have cell service (cabin in the mountains). If I turn airplane mode on and wifi on while at home I can text and make calls with just wifi. This is with Comcast. At the other location we have Frontier and the texts come in via wifi but do not go out. There are also issues getting the wifi calling to work.

Also, when I use the application on my tablet the outgoing messages I send do not seem to sync between devices.

I truly want to get this resolved, CDJOHNS5. Have you tried using the default Samsung Messaging app on your phone, while at the cabin? Just for troubleshooting purposes? Also, have you done any troubleshooting with Frontier? Do other devices experience the same/similar issues?

Hello.  Is there a reason messages will be received over Wi-Fi without cell service but will fail to send?  I was assuming Message+ worked like iMessage on Apple devices where it could be used over Wi-Fi without cell service.  Regarding Wi-Fi calling, I am sure the phone is actively connected to Wi-Fi.  I have a 200/200 plan through my ISP, so speed also shouldn't be an issue.  Google Voice Wi-Fi calling works fine.

@vzw_customer_support One other question related to this.  I have the application installed so I can text over my tablet.  When I do though, the messages do not update on my phone.  I can only see the other person's texts I've received but not the ones I sent out on my tablet.  Is there a way to get these to link so I will see the full conversation?  Thanks.

I don't sync with my tablet so have no clue about any of that.

Hi, I have been having the same issue with texts not sending over wifi. I took the sim card out, turn off wifi calling then rebooted and turned it back on. I have a Galaxy S21

Thank you

Hello, Spudlogic, thanks for reaching out regarding your messages. What messaging app are you using? Are there any other changes aside from turning WiFi on?
