Text to my phone showing strange phone number for a contact

I received a text this morning from a 313 area code number. The message had my sisters name, a hyphen and then her message. I asked if she changed numbers. She said no and that she used her most recent text thread to message me. Why would Message+ show a random phone number?

I know I would be puzzled if I had a different number under a known contact. Let's figure this out and solve the mystery. Did you receive her message under the same messaging thread? If you reply to her message, does she receive your response?

I received her message as a NEW message from a 313 area code. I replied to the message and she did receive it on her end.
