You can send text messages from Japan to the US by dialing 010 then 1 then ten digit U.S. number (you can place a call the same way).

To place a call to a number in Japan dial 0 then local number.

To place a call to other countries dial 010 then Country Code then international number.

To contact our Global Support Team dial 010 then 1 then 908-559-4899 (this call is free).

Calls are billed at $1.99/minute.

I was told yesterday by customer service that text messages CANNOT be sent from Japan. They can only be received, but one cannot reply. My son is oveer there now and indeed he cannot text.
