Texting to Canada

My family has the family plan with unlimited text messaging. My mom went on vacation in Vancouver and we've been texting. Is this free because she has a US number and it is Verizon to Verizon or is it International fees because she is in a different country?

Thanks!

texting to a us or canadian number while you or they are in canada is included in your plan if you have unlimited texting.

If you are texting to Canada the text messages will be free. Each message that is received while in Canada will be 5 cents per message. Each text message that is sent while in Canada will be .50 cents per message. Hope this helps!

Are you positive about that? I found this info,

While traveling in the U.S.,Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico text messages sent to non-U.S. phone numbers of participating carriers will not be applied against any monthly text messaging allowance and are charged the following:

  • $0.25/address sent
  • $0.20/message received

Text messages sent to phone numbers in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico are charged domestic rates per your plan.

Worst case without a texting plan, the cost is 25c.

FYI when I was in the US Virgin Islands, I was not charged anything extra for texting, data or phone. I would think with the current PRL Verizon would be roaming off of Sprint.

We have unlimited texting and go to Canada all the time, niagara falls to be specific.  The few times I had to send a text from there or get one back I never saw anything extra on the bill.  Come to think of it last month I started getting tweets from twitter on my phone and didn't think to disable that when we went to Canada and got quite a few and  I didn't see anything extra on the bill then either.  Mary

It appears that there is agreement here that text messages sent between two Verizon Wireless customers who have US numbers (and let's say an unlimited texting plan) will not cost anything if one of them travels to Canada and they text back and forth. (And, if both of them travel to Canada and text to each other while there, it seems there is no charge.) What is not clear, however, is what fees (if any) apply when such a U.S. customer texts to a Canadian person who has a Canadian cellphone number (as a resident Canadian cellphone user would have). (And does it matter whether both of these persons happen to be in Canada when texting?) Too bad Verizon cannot clearly put such information online.

This is an old thread, but this is exactly the question I need answered, too. I have a Canadian friend who texted me this week, and I replied. I will know on my next bill (or so) whether I was charged for that. Or, I could take a little initiative and see if the charge is on the running log of my texts here on My Verizon Wireless.

It’s awesome that you’re looking to online options to manage your account and usage, txbyaccident. You’re in the right place. You can check your text usage on My Verizon to see if there’s a charge near your friend’s number on the bill view. It’s also possible your plan includes text messaging. While you’re on My Verizon, be sure to check out two awesome values we offer. One, with Verizon Wireless, you can change plans as often as your needs change. Be sure to review all our current plans often:https://www.verizonwireless.com/plans/ Two, Verizon Up: m.vzw.com/m/UpSocialEach line can enroll on its own. You can get great rewards such as Device Dollars, concert tickets, daily bonus promotions, and more, just for doing things like paying your bill! Is there anything else we can do for you today?

It's awesome that Verizon customer support reads and replies to these forums.  It would be even more awesome if you answered the question.  Telling a customer to look at their bill afterwards to determine if this will incur an additional charge isn't helpful.
