What is the difference between sent and delivered?

Just recently starting using the app. I've noticed usually it will show the message is delivered, which is a nice feature I've never had with stock android messaging apps before. Sometimes though it will never show delivered, just sent. When it doesn't say delivered does that mean it wasn't. People I am texting are all on verizons network and use droids like myself.

Delivered means they are on Verizon and got the message for sure. Sent means you sent it but they didn't for sure get it
