international texting

Just wondering if someone can help me with a problem I have with international texting. I have a friend in the Dominican Republic who sends me messages but I never receive them. I can see from his mobile that all the messages say sent but they never arrived to my phone. He receives all of the ones that I send to him. I do not have this problems receiving sms from other dominican mobile numbers, just his. the Dominican Republic phone number structure is the same as the U.S. in that it has an area code (809) and a 7 digit number after it, so there is not country code to dial nor 011. I obviously have Verizon (blackberry bold 9930) and he has Orange Dominicana. Could anyone please help me or have any ideas to why they aren't delivered to my phone? Thank you!
