I just bought new phone but cant use calendar how do i get access?

I imagine you are having problems with the calendar application that came installed on the Vortex and not a 3rd party calendar.
What happens when you try to access the calendar or attempt to make a calendar entry? Does it give an error message?
If this is the case, the best option would be to either perform a hard reset or you can add a new G Mail account.
Once you get the calendar on the phone, you will be able to sync the account to your G Mail account.
