How do you clear the message icon of incorrect info?

RE: Clear Counter  – To clear the counter, please follow these steps to 'Mark all as Read' :  Tap on 1 avatar, then ‘All’, then on the ‘read  icon (chat bubble with checkmark). Then restart your device.   If no change, please email us to verizonmessages@verizonwireless.com

All of my messages had been read.  Don't know why but cleared without my doing anything.
