problem with message notification since the latest upgrade

Ever since the latest update to Verizon messages+ there have been issues.  When I get a message my notification tone goes off as it should.  However, when I open the message the default notification tone (not even the one I have selected) goes off nonstop anywhere from 5 to over 20 times in a row each time I open a message.  This makes the app nearly impossible to use especially in a work setting and when you are getting multiple work related texts.

Notifications are an excellent way to know what's coming in on your phone, but not so much when it notifies you while you're already using that app. From your description, it would be recommended to contact the app developer via your phone's app store. This will be the best way to notify them of what is not a normal action for any application.
