The messages plus app splits the screen with recent contacts.

I believe you are using a tablet since I have Message+ on my smartphone and my tablet and only experience this on my tablet.
If you have the split screen view you can tap on the right hand side to get rid of the overlay of the recent contacts. Let me know if this doesn't work for you.
