I have an old iPhone 6 due for an upgrade. If I replace the phone with and iPad that was once on my account will I lose the upgrade?
If it's owned equipment, no. If you used the line to get a new iPad, yes.

An upgrade is only lost if you upgrade or cancel the line. So you can certainly activate an old device on the line and still be able to upgrade the line when you want to.
