Are you REQUIRED to upgrade your phone when you resign a contract?

Hey everyone.

Are you required to upgrade your phone (buy a new phone for the upgrade price) when you resign a 2 (or however many year) year contract? If you don't, do you lose the ability to upgrade your phone at a later time?

Example: If i have a plan with 3 lines on it and we all got new phones when we signed the contract, when our contract is up, do we HAVE to upgrade our phone then or can we wait until our first phone goes bad and still get the upgrad (cheaper) price? Can we upgrade individually by line? Like upgrade 1 of the phones and wait on the others? Basically, can we upgrade whenever we want as long as we havnt already used the upgrade on a certain line?

Is the answer the same for every verison plan, family and small business?

thanks in advance,

Tom

I don't know about small business, but this info is relevant to family and individual plans for personal use.

Once your contract is up, you do NOT have to sign a new contract to maintain service.  You can go month-to-month with your current phone and nothing will change.  Until you sign a new contract, you remain eligible to upgrade to a new phone at the 2-year price, and I believe that NE2 credits do not expire, so you are free to wait as long as you like, paying month-to-month, to upgrade and sign a new contract.

Every line on a family plan has its own contract, so you can feel free to renew one of them and leave the others month-to-month until you need to upgrade.  You should consider the value to you of having each line's contract end at the same time, this can make it much more convenient to switch to another carrier if you want to.

There is no reason to sign a new contract if you are not upgrading your phone.  Month-to-month service is identical in cost and features, and once you sign your contract, you are not eligible to upgrade until month 20.

Hope that helps!

is correct! You are NOT required to resign a contract when your current contract expires. You can remain on month-to-month. Once you decide to upgrade your devices, then you can sign a contact to get discounted prices on equipment. Your New Every 2 credit will not expire unless unless you lower your plan then the available discount will change. Hope this helps!

This is not true. Read the small print.

"You may have only six months to take advantage of the New Every Two benefits once you become eligible." As far as I have been advised, the new every 2 discount will not be removed from your account unless you make particular changes to your calling plan.

Hi Tom -

The Subject line of this post caught my eye--it's already been answered quite well but I would rephrase or restate the question and you'll have the answer.....

Are you required to upgrade your phone (buy a new phone for the upgrade price) when you resign a 2 (or however many year) year contract?  No, you are required to re-sign or renew your contract when you upgrade your phone at the discounted price....and you can do that as soon as you become eligible, or at any time after that.

HTH,
