I've got a family plan with five phones and I am approaching my two-year date. I haven't decided whether to remain with Verizon. In the meantime, two of the basic phones on this plan are malfunctioning. I would like to pick up some used phones to replace them in the short term. On Craigslist, I can find all sorts of flip phones which make texting difficult or a number of smartphones. Can I replace the basic phones with used smartphones without Verizon requiring that I upgrade to data plans?

no; if you activate a smartphone you'll have to choose a data plan (either a tiered plan, like $30 for 2 gb, per phone, or switch the entire account over to Share Everything)
