I have an iPad 4th Gen. I've had it for almost 3 years
I've taken good care of it, I'm very vigilant, except for today: it was a bad day, and I absent-minded-ly left it on the roof of my car after I set it down so I could grab my keys, and sadly like a forgotten coffee cup, it fell onto a highway on ramp, and the screen cracked in several places. Amazingly, it still works fine! especially considering it may or may not had been clipped by passing motorists. My apologies I just needed to vent...
ANYWAY, long and short of it, I realize the device is eligible for an upgrade, is that still possible even though the screen is cracked?
If the iPad is out of contract, you own it.
You can buy a new one, use any upgrade credit ( if you don't mind contract for 2 years and need the cellular internet on the device)
Apple will fix for $299
Local repair shop will fix for about half that
buy wifi only iPad, save $150!(more than contract discount) and use hotspot when you need cellular Internet.
