Since Verizon is not responding here, is it possible their system outage is also affecting their internet service? I've tried to contact them by chat and the chat buttons say the chatters are busy and the link buttons are grayed out. Logging into my online account took me 20 minutes also. Verizon may not be able to post an emergency message due to the problem. Just saying....not defending the outage.
I think that when the eastern half of a country has a widespread issue with their service, they all call to complain. Naturally that is what they would do, it's what I would do if I hadn't looked it up first. Customer care is drowning in calls, chats, and emails I'm sure.
They know now guys, let them fix it!!
